Toyota Recalls 126,691 Tundra and Lexus Vehicles Over Engine Machining Debris

What’s happening

Toyota is recalling 126,691 vehicles in the United States because machining debris left in engines during manufacturing can cause stalling or prevent engines from starting. The action covers certain 2022–2024 Toyota Tundra pickups, 2022–2024 Lexus LX 600 SUVs, and 2024 Lexus GX 550 SUVs.

Safety risk

Leftover engine machining debris can lead to drivability problems severe enough to cause a stall while driving (increasing crash risk) or a no-start condition that can leave owners stranded.

Owner notifications and repair

Toyota plans to begin notifying owners by mail starting Dec. 22, followed by a second notice once a repair is available. All recall repairs will be performed at dealers free of charge.

Affected models

  • 2022–2024 Toyota Tundra (full-size pickup)
  • 2022–2024 Lexus LX 600 (three-row luxury SUV)
  • 2024 Lexus GX 550 (two- or three-row luxury SUV)

Not every vehicle within these model years is affected; specific VINs are identified by production records.

What owners should do now

  • Continue driving unless you experience symptoms (stalling, no-start, warning lights, unusual noises, reduced performance). If symptoms occur, contact your dealer for inspection.
  • Watch for the mailed notice and follow-up communication regarding the remedy and scheduling.
  • Check your vehicle’s recall status by VIN using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) online recall tool, or Toyota/Lexus owner portals.
  • Ensure your mailing address is up to date so you receive recall notices promptly.

Background and process

Machining debris is a known quality control concern in engine manufacturing. If not fully removed before assembly, debris can circulate in oil or lodge in sensitive areas, causing drivability issues. Automakers typically issue an initial interim letter describing the defect and risks, then send a second notice when a validated remedy and parts are ready—Toyota indicates it is following this approach.

Next steps

Toyota is finalizing the repair. Dealers will receive technical instructions and parts allocation ahead of appointments. Customers will be informed when to schedule service after the follow-up notice is issued.
