Stellantis Recalls 113,000 Jeep PHEVs for Sand-Contaminated Turbocharged Engines

Recall Summary

Recall Overview

Stellantis is recalling nearly 113,000 plug-in hybrid Jeep SUVs in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that can cause catastrophic engine failure and, in some cases, engine-bay fires. The issue stems from sand and debris left over from the engine block casting process in certain four-cylinder engines used in the 4xe variants of the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.

Affected Vehicles

  • 2024–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe — 76,019 vehicles built June 7, 2023 through March 4, 2025
  • 2024–2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe — 36,840 vehicles built July 19, 2023 through March 3, 2025

The recall targets only the plug-in hybrid 4xe versions. The defect is tied to the internal combustion engine, not the electric components.

Cause and Consequences

Sand from the engine block casting process may remain inside the engine, allowing debris to circulate and damage internal components. Regulators warn this can lead to:

  • Engine-bay fire
  • Unexpected, unrecoverable loss of propulsion

Warning signs may be limited to an engine knocking noise or a warning light on the instrument cluster.

Known Incidents (All Markets, as of Oct. 20)

  • 36 customer assistance records
  • 144 warranty claims
  • 36 fires
  • 50 loss-of-propulsion field reports
  • 50 other service records
  • Three injuries; no crashes reported

What Owners Should Do Now

  • Do not drive affected vehicles.
  • Park outside, away from structures.
  • If you notice engine knocking or a dashboard warning lamp, stop driving and contact a dealer.
  • A repair is under development. Owner notification letters are expected to mail Dec. 29; Stellantis will service all affected vehicles once a remedy is available.

Scope and Timeline

The suspect engine population spans nearly two years of production. For Grand Cherokee PHEVs, it begins July 19, 2023 and concludes March 3, 2025; for Wrangler 4xe, it runs from June 7, 2023 to March 4, 2025. The remedy has not been finalized; dealers typically receive instructions ahead of customer letters to begin repairs when parts and procedures are available. The filing does not specify towing or loaner provisions.

Regulatory updates occur frequently as remedies are refined. Owners of 2024 and 2025 Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles should monitor for formal notices and contact Jeep dealers for the latest instructions.
