Mass Ford/Lincoln Recall of 116,672 Vehicles Over Defective Block Heaters to Strain Dealer Service Operations

Recall Summary

Overview

Ford and Lincoln are recalling 116,672 U.S. vehicles to address engine block heaters that can crack and leak coolant, creating a potential short-circuit and fire hazard when the heater is plugged in. The risk is tied to use with a 110-volt outlet, especially where a circuit breaker or GFCI is not functional.

Affected vehicles

The recall covers a subset of models equipped with the engine block heater, primarily those with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

  • Ford Escape: 65,683 units (2013–2019)
  • Ford Focus: 49,080 units (2013–2018)
  • Lincoln MKC: 1,909 units (2015–2016)

Only vehicles with the block heater installed are included; other powertrains or models without the heater are unaffected.

What’s the safety issue?

Cracks can develop at solder joints in the heater. Coolant can seep into the heater’s electrical cord; as it evaporates, conductive salt residue may form, increasing the chance of a short that could overheat wiring or ignite nearby material while energized. Vehicles not connected to external power are not at risk from this defect.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Coolant spots under the vehicle
  • Loss of cabin heat or low coolant level
  • Engine overheating or running hotter than normal
  • Smoke or a burning odor near the block heater wiring when plugged in

Remedy and timeline

Ford will notify owners by mail in February. Dealers will replace the complete block heater with an updated part at no cost once available. The updated heater is expected to reach dealers in April, after which final repairs can be scheduled.

What owners should do now

  1. Avoid using the block heater until the recall repair is completed.
  2. If you must use it, ensure the outlet has a working circuit breaker and GFCI, and do not use damaged cords or adapters.
  3. Monitor for the warning signs above; if present, stop using the heater and contact your dealer.
  4. Check your VIN on NHTSA’s recall site or contact a Ford/Lincoln dealer to confirm involvement, and watch for the mailed notice.

Context

The recall coincides with severe cold across much of the U.S., when block heaters are commonly used to aid cold starts. The filings emphasize that the hazard is preventable once the updated heater is installed.
